Chlorella
By admin | October 6, 2007
The Science
There are currently no scientific studies published in peer-reviewed journals that have evaluated the use of Chlorella as a detoxifier of mercury or heavy metals in humans. There are no studies that show that Chlorella will selectively remove mercury or heavy metals from the human body when it is given as an oral supplement.
The claims made on many websites that Chlorella is anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and will detoxify the body of heavy metals are based on studies done on mice and rats. While intriguing, these studies can not be used to definitively state that the purported positive effects of Chlorella will apply to humans when taken as a supplement.
Anecdotal Evidence
Many Lyme patients take daily doses of Chlorella tablets as food supplement and it is a commonly used strategy to “detoxify” the body of mercury and other heavy metals.
Patients take the tablets under a wide range of dosing strategies - from 1-2 tablets a day to up to 15 tablets a day. Some patients feel that to be most effective the tablets need to be taken 30 minutes before meals. Others have been told by their physicians or naturopaths to take the tablets on an emptying stomach.
Side Effects and Complications
Some patients report nausea and vomiting after a sustained course of taking a large (10-15) pills a day.
Manufacture
There seems to be a debate as to the “safety” of taking Chlorella as a supplement, due to the belief on the part of some Lyme patients that Chlorella has an affinity for mercury and will ”suck mercury out of the environment” and expose supplement takers to high levels of dietary mercury.
Some Lyme patients tout brands such as Biopureus or Kings Chlorella as “safe” brands but there is little scientific or formal testing evidence to support this.
