Chinese Herbal Supplement Yin Chiao Used For Sore Throat

By admin | September 29, 2007

Yin Chiao is an imported Chinese herbal remedy used by many patients with Lyme disease for the symptoms of sore throat and other upper respiratory tract symptoms. The main supplier to the United States is the Tianjin Medicines and Health Products Importer and Exporter Corporation of China. It is available over the internet and in most Chinese pharmacies.

The package recommends taking 5 pills several times a day at the onset of symptoms. One bottle containing 24 servings was recently purchased in a large metropolitan Chinese neighborhood for $4.

Yin Chiao is actually a mixture of multiple herbs and contains the following ingredients as stated on the package:

Japanese Honeysuckle (flower) - 360 mg

Forsythia (root) - 360 mg

Burdock (fruit) - 250 mg

Platycodon (root) - 215 mg

Chinese mint (above ground parts) - 145 mg

Chinese licorice (root) - 145 mg

Lophatherum (stem and leaf) - 200 mg

Soy bean (seed)  - 215 mg

Schizonepeta (fine leaf) - 145 mg

Anecdotally, patients who take this supplement report feeling relief of symptoms within several minutes. There is no level 1 evidence (i.e., no studies that are randomized and double-blinded) that show the efficacy of this supplement. In addition, the manufacture of this supplement is outside of the jurisdiction of the United States Food and Drug Administration and it is difficult to determine if the supplement contains harmful contaminants.

As with all supplements this substance should not be taken under unless the patient is under the direction of a physician.
